Using The Steps to KM Calculator

Our calculator allows you to convert the number of steps you made into the number of kilometers you crossed. In order for you to get this result, you must give the calculator a few pieces of information.

Slow walk (~3kph)Your speed is around 3kph. You usually walk a little slower than the average walker. This speed is usual for children aged 3 to 6.
Average walk (~5kph)You walk around the same speed as the average walker in the streets, at around 5 kph.
Brisk walk (>6.5kph)You walk slightly faster than the average walker at 6.5 kph, yet you do not run or accelerate significantly.
Jog (~8kph)You are slower than the average runner, but significantly faster than most walkers at 8 kph. You always have at least one foot touching the ground.
Run (~9.5kph)This is the average running speed at 9.5 kph, typical for the average adult while running.
Fast run (~12kph)This is the typical sprinting speed of adults at 12 kph.
Very fast run (>16kph)This is the sprinting speed of athletes and professional sportspeople at 16 kph.

You will receive the distance you crossed in kilometers, as well as some extra information, such as your number of steps per minute, per km, the amount of calories you burned, or the time it took you to cross the distance.

Converting Steps to Kilometers Manually

Before you attempt to calculate manually, you need to be able to convert your height into step length. If you can measure the length of your step, you can skip this step and move directly to the next one.

To convert height into step length, we can use an approximation defined by the following equations for each gender.

For Males:

Step length ≈ Height × 0.415

For Females:

Step length ≈ Height × 0.413

If you decide to convert the number of steps you took into kilometers manually, you can use the following formula.

Total Distance=[(Number of Steps)×(Step Length​ in Meters)]÷1,000

The reason for the division by 1000 is only to convert our result into kilometers. If you have your step length in cm, you divide by 100,000, and if you have your step length in km, you do not divide by anything.

Solved example

Let’s find out how far will Amanda, a female measuring 170 cm, walk if she does 5,000 steps.

1We start by approximating her step length as follows: Step length ≈ Height × 0.413 ≈ 170×0.413 ≈ 70.21. Her steps are 70.21 cm long.
2We convert the step length into 0.7021 meters and then round it to 0.7 meters for easier calculations.
3We plug these values into our formula. We get Total Distance=[(Number of Steps)×(Step Length​ in Meters)]÷1000 = (5000×0.7)÷1000 = 3.5 km.
4If she does 5,000 steps, she walks 3.5 km.

If we then want to convert this into time, we can divide the distance of 3.5km by the speed she was walking. For example, if she was walking at a speed of 7 km/h, it would have taken her 3.5÷7 = 0.5, hence it would have taken her 0.5 hours, or 30 minutes.
