What is a cup?
A cup is a unit of volume and is a standard measurement in US recipe books in particular. It is a common thing to see and understand in the US, but for recipes from other parts of the world you might see different measurements and volume units used, such as quarts. There are different cup sizes as well, depending on whether you are in the US or other countries. In the US the cup is slightly smaller in volume than the cup size you find in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth countries. In some older recipes from the UK, you might even see an Imperial cup size, which is larger again.
What is a quart?
There are two different measurements of fluid quart – which is a unit of liquid volume. This is equal to two pints or a quarter of a gallon. In the US, a quart is equivalent to 946.35mL, whilst in the UK the quart is larger in volume, 1136.52mL.
How many cups will I find in a quart?
There is a simple formula that will help you work out how to convert quarts into cups. This works when you are converting two measurement units from the same country. So, for one quart it is equivalent to 4 cups in that country. You can see that here:
Quart | Cups |
---|---|
1 (US, fluid) | 4 (US) |
1 (UK, fluid) | 4 (UK or Imperial) |
Of course, you will end up with a different measurement if you mix up the different countries. In UK recipe books if they do reference cup sizes it will be the metric cup mentioned, and not the US size cup. Metric cup sizes:
Quart | Cups (Metric) |
---|---|
1 (US, fluid) | 3.78541 |
1 (UK, fluid) | 4.546 |
Converting a quart and a half into cups
If you have 6 standard US cups this converts into one and a half US fluid quarts. For one quart there are 4 US cups.
