What’s the difference between dry ounces and fluid ounces?

In simple terms, a fluid ounce is used to measure fluids and is seen with the abbreviation ‘fl. oz.’, whilst you’ll find dry measurements are weighed as an ounce, with the abbreviation ‘oz.’. Through this you can see that a fluid ounce is a measurement of volume, and an ounce is a measurement of weight. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the difference in conversions for both fluid and dry ounces.

How easy is it to convert a cup into dry ounces?

You must always factor in the density of the ingredients, as this will form a different weight for each. For instance, one cup (US) of granulated sugar measures at about 71 oz., whilst one cup (US) of powdered sugar is a different weight, converting to 4.2 oz. Always remember that a US cup is a unit of volume, and the dry ounce (oz.) is a unit of weight.

Using our converter, you can choose from a range of ingredients and measurements, to convert ingredients quickly and accurately into the correct measurement for your recipe requirements.
