What is time and a half?

Time and a half is important to understand as it can make a huge difference to your earnings. It is defined as when an employee has a 50% increase to their hourly rate of pay. It is usually applied to overtime, but it can also often be applied to working on Bank Holidays or weekends or on occasions when irregular hours are required.

How to calculate Time and a Half

It is simple. To work out Time and a Half (TH) take your standard hourly rate (SHR) and multiply it by 1.5.

Here is the formula:

TH = SHR*1.5

TH calculations work most easily if you are on a defined hourly rate. For example, if you are on $10 per hour for your first 40 hours of weekly work, but TH for any above that, you can simply multiply 10 x 1.5 for the number of extra hours you work.

Example:

You work 46 hours one week. This means –

40 ~hours*\$10 = \$400

6 ~hours*(\$10*1.5) = 6*15 = \$90.

Total weekly earnings = $490

Calculating Hourly Time and Half on Salaried jobs

This can be a little bit trickier, as most people on a salary are not always aware of their hourly rate. But sometimes you get offered TH earning opportunities, so you need to know what that amounts to.

Example:

You work 40 hours a week and you are on an annual salary of $39000.

We firstly find your weekly salary. That is done by dividing $39000 by 52. This gives us $750 per week.

We then divide that weekly rate by the number of hours you are contracted to work. Let’s assume 40. Your hourly rate is therefore 750 divided by 40, which equals $18.75.

Then apply the TH formula

TH = SHR*1.5

TH = 18.75*1.5 = 28.12.
